The CompassRock Story
2011
CompassRock was established in the U.S. in the aftermath of the Global Financial Crisis when David Woodward partnered with private equity firm Fortress Investment Group. The company was founded as an affiliated asset management and property management firm, focused primarily on turning around distressed assets.
2012 - 2014
CompassRock worked with many of the real estate industry’s largest institutional investors to reposition and sell trouble assets in the U.S. The portfolio under CompassRock’s management grew to 35,000 units.
2015
CompassRock oversaw the turnaround of Stuyvesant Town (commonly known as “StuyTown”) in New York City, the largest apartment community in the U.S. The property encompasses over 11,000 units with 25,000 residents in Manhattan. Under CompassRock’s management, StuyTown underwent a significant transformation, culminating in a sale to Blackstone for $5.4 billion – the largest single-asset real estate transaction in U.S. history.

From its work and experience in the US, CompassRock implemented its “value-add” business plan on this first-generation build-to-rent asset which included updating the units, common areas and amenities. As part of this programme, the property was re-branded as Market Quarter.
